On the night of 12 October 1944 six Liberator bombers of the South African Air Force 31 and 34 squadrons, with 48 airmen, were lost during a mission to drop supplies to partisans behind enemy lines in the Po valley, Northern Italy, this remains the largest loss of aircraft and men for a single SAAF mission to date.

In 2000  the Mayor and locals of the village of Ostana held a memorial service to honour the crew of the aircraft that had crashed close by, and erected a memorial at the crash site. Sevices followed over the next few years in the villages of Bra, Ala di Stura, Rora, Cantalopa, Neirone and Valprato Soana.

This is the story of these events in honour of the crews.
